UDP author sadé powell and Steffani Jemison explore and trace many swirling and divergent lines. Marks on a page, lines of thought, the trajectory of a body moving from one place to another, artistic and personal lineages, the choreographic score of everyday performance, the long path of learning and witnessing. Featuring a guest introduction by Evelyn Reilly.

 

Masks are required at all Poetry Project events unless otherwise specifically noted. If you forget to bring your mask, we are happy to provide you with one. We also encourage all event attendees to take a rapid test the day of the event before heading to the church.

sadé powell is a concrete poet from new york exploring meaning-making through print and paper techniques. inspired by her upbringing, she uses the sonic, kinesthetic, and linguistic elements of her 1940s typewriter to experiment with dissemblance as black feminist poethics. sadé holds a ma in performance studies at nyu tisch. her first-ish chapbook wordtomydead is forthcoming with ugly duckling presse.

Steffani Jemison was born in Berkeley, California and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions and special projects at JOAN Los Angeles (2022), Contemporary Art Center Cincinnati (2021), the Everson Museum (2021), the Stedelijk Museum (2019), Nottingham Contemporary (2018), Jeu de Paume and CAPC Bordeaux (both 2017), MoMA, New York (2015), RISD Museum, Providence (2015), and LAXART, Los Angeles (2013) among others. Her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, including the Guggenheim Museum (2021), the Whitney Biennial, New York (2019), the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2019), and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia (2017). Her work is in numerous public collections, including the Hirschorn Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Brooklyn Museum, the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Albright-Knox Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, and others. Jemison currently lives and works in Brooklyn and is an Associate Professor at Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts.
