Small Press Logistics 101 with SPD

at Small Press Distribution

SPD Summer School is a three part series of hour-long workshops by SPD directors, managers, and staff aimed at illuminating the current state of small press publishing. As the industry changes with COVID-19, this nut-and-bolts program aims to demystify the distribution process and provide foundational knowledge that will allow publishers to better adapt to the present moment according to their specific needs and priorities. While this workshop is intended to serve the publishers we already work with, SPD is offering this free to the general public so that we might support any emerging small press publishers, as well as authors and booksellers curious about how distribution can affect sales and publicity.

Our second workshop in this series is Small Press Logistics 101 facilitated by our Executive Director Brent Cunningham. Small Press Logistics 101 will cover some of the ways small press books plug into the book industry’s standard supply chain (or, frequently, fail to plug in). We will cover basic book industry terms, and provide an overview of the industry’s expectations around margins and a workable small press “business model.” In particular we’ll take a look at three key tools small presses have: printing costs, list price, and crowdfunding.
