Applications for the position of Distribution Manager are now closed.
Ugly Duckling Presse, a nonprofit publisher of poetry, translation, essay, performance, and art, is seeking to hire a Distribution Manager with a flexible start date in early 2021.
The Distribution Manager oversees the circulation of our books to individuals and institutions. This includes: managing individual and institutional subscriptions, direct order fulfillment, and UDP’s partner bookstore program; fulfilling wholesale orders as needed; stocking and managing UDP’s physical inventory onsite and at our distributors. The role encompasses customer service, outreach to institutions and booksellers, and strategic thinking about how to find and facilitate new readers for UDP’s new releases and in-print backlist titles.
As a member of the 4-person UDP Working Collective, the DM attends weekly planning meetings and contributes to consensus-based decision-making on all aspects of the Presse’s operations; they also attend quarterly meetings with the Board of Directors. In their day-to-day, the DM helps to manage the work of UDP’s three apprentices and assists with the upkeep of the UDP studio.
A passion for contemporary poetry and poetry in translation is important, as are a careful editorial eye, a knack for information tracking, and strong time management and communication skills. An ideal candidate will show a passion for and/or prior experience in independent publishing; past distribution and sales experience are particularly valuable. Training in all aspects of the job will be accommodated during paid time in the first 4 weeks of employment.
The position is currently part-time, but with room to grow; it starts at 2 days (16 hours) per week at $20 per hour (the current pay-rate for all UDP staff). The DM would be working in-person at our Brooklyn studio (barring any mandatory closures due to COVID-19). Our preference is for the Distribution Manager to work a Tuesday/Friday schedule, though there will be flexibility in setting this schedule. UDP cannot currently offer benefits. Perks include free books; an exciting, cooperative, non-hierarchical work environment; and involvement in meaningful work for a noncommercial literary cause.
UDP is located in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, at the Old American Can Factory (232 Third St., Brooklyn NY 11215). The building is ADA accessible with prior arrangement.
