Andy Fitch, No Collective & Sayako Nakayasu

July 25, 2010
12:00 AM
Tokyo, Japan
Corpo Plumhill Playhouse
4-34-8 Daita Setagaya-ku

Part of the Survival Series at Corpo Plumhill Playhouse.
Andy Fitch will enact dialogues from his recent book Ten Walks/Two Talks (published 2010, Ugly Duckling Presse) which combines a series of sixty-minute, sixty-sentence walks around Manhattan with a pair of roving dialogues—one of which takes place during a late-night “philosophical” ramble through Central Park. Mapping 21st-century New York, Andy Fitch and his collaborator Jon Cotner update the meandering and meditative form of Basho’s travel diaries to construct a descriptive/dialogic fugue.

No Collective (You Nakai et al.) will read their soon-to-be published playscript Concertos (forthcoming, Ugly Duckling Presse) in its entirety. Concertos describes and prescribes, in the form of a playscript, the creation of a musical performance. The original three musical works were performed in Tokyo by four musicians, a dog, a bird, and several guests on the same August day of 2008. Concertos embeds the process of reading into any subsequent performances of the piece. In fact, in order to be published at all, the entire playscript of Concertos must, and will, be read out loud.

Sawako Nakayasu will perform the following poem/score, with the help of musician and insect performers.

Improvisational Score: for equal numbers of musicians and insects

This performance may take place over any duration of time, from 0 seconds to many many years.
A number of insects are placed in a clear container so that they are as comfortable as possible, given the circumstances. They are given oxygen and food and water, though they may not escape. The container of insects is placed onstage and a light is directed through the container and projected onto a larger screen so that the audience may see the insects.
Each musician chooses an insect, and plays accordingly.
If two insects begin fighting, the corresponding musicians should also fight, musically or literally.
If an insect dies, the corresponding musician should also die, musically or literally.

***SPACE IS LIMITED TO 20 GUESTS ONLY! RSVP to emergency@uglyducklingpresse.org***
