Poet and translator Eugene Ostashevsky will discuss his work on the Russian 1920s and1930s avant-garde group OBERIU. After the publication of OBERIU: An Anthology
of Russian Absurdism, edited by Ostashevsky, The Times Literary Supplement noted
that OBERIU “mounted a challenge in the late 1920s and 30s to ‘worldly logic’ by
questioning and confusing the most basic categories through which the world may be
rendered coherent and transformed into narrative.” Ostashevsky will also talk about his experience translating contemporary Russian poetry, and about the challenges facing Russian poetry today.

The reading will be in English and Russian, followed by a Q&A and small reception.

Presented by Crossing Borders, the Cultural Program of the Russian and Slavic Division, and the Russian Club of Hunter College.
