Telefone Sem Fio: The Word-Things of Augusto de Campos Revisited

November 4 - December 17, 2011 Opening Reception: Friday, November 4th, 6-8pm In collaboration with Telephone EFA Project Space, in collaboration with Telephone Journal present “Telefone Sem Fio: Word-Things of Augusto de Campos Revisted. This exhibition uses the work of the Brazilian poet Augusto de Campos as a catalyst for an experimental multi-disciplinary exercise in which a renowned group of poets, translators and artists, who exist across a continuum of text, sound and visual expression, invent translations of select examples of De Campos' work. Augusto de Campos is a poet, translator, music critic, and visual artist whose work emphasizes the direct connections between language, sound, and image. He was one of the originators of Concrete Poetry, an international movement that began in the 1950s and continues to influence the work of musicians, visual artists, and writers today. The Fall 2011 issue of Telephone journal will be dedicated to the exhibition, and published in collaboration with Ugly Duckling Presse. Artists: Angela Lain & Rafael Detanico, Bibi Calderaro, Deric Carner, Brendan Fernandes, Rossana Martinez, Tom Moody, Trong Gia Nguyen, Jennifer Schmidt, Dannielle Tegeder, and Andrea Van Der Straeten. Poets: Jean-Sébastien Baillat, Jen Bervin, Ray Bianchi, Macgregor Card, Nico Pam Dick, Kenneth Goldsmith, Thessia Machado, Benjamin Moreno, Charles Perrone,Steve Savage, Monica de la Torre, Edwin Torres, and Rodrigo Toscano. Poet and visual artist Jen Bervin's work brings together text and textile in a practice that encompasses poetry, artist books, large-scale art works, and archival research. Her poetry/artist books include The Dickinson Composites (Granary Books 2010), The Silver Book (Ugly Duckling Presse chapbook 2010), The Desert (Granary Books 2008), A Non- Breaking Space (UDP 2005, web-only), The Red Box (2004), and Nets (UDP 2004). Bervin's work has been shown at The Walker Art Center and The Wright Exhibition Space, and is in many special collections including the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Stanford University, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and the British Library. She has received fellowships in art and writing from The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, The New York Foundation for the Arts, Centrum, The MacDowell Colony, Visual Studies Workshop, and The Camargo Foundation and is an editor-at-large for jubilat. Bervin will teach at Vermont College of Fine Arts and Harvard University in 2011. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
