In Monitored Properties, Florencia Castellano takes on the figure of the gaucho that has permeated Argentine history and helped define patriarchy for centuries. Alexis Almeida’s English translations en face transmit Castellano’s playful irony, wit, and lyrical dynamism and interrogates the ideological forces that permeate the smallest moments of our lives. At once a testament to living histories and their resistance to state-sanctioned narratives, and an inquiry into the rituals of cultural inheritance, Monitored Properties suggests that automatic responses can be broken down within language. If no haven is safe from the language of patriarchy, then its reverse could be true: no language, however emblazoned, is beyond the reach of the poet.
