port richmond

we had been to port richmond for pierogi
which is polish for pigeon. we ordered phonetically,
a mind of cabbage & salt, spoke summer english
about form & far off things like birds
& the possibilities of structure. every time we looked
we could hardly see the skyline for the buildings.
obstruction was part of the view. the liberties
were there like great mirrors too far to do their job.
everytime we looked we thought
we might see paris maybe kraków maybe ourselves.

[a] strange, marvelous, sometimes shouting, sometimes whispering thing
