Workshops & Seminars Program

UDP offers one-day seminars and four-session workshops on writing, poetics, letterpress printing, and bookmaking taught by authors and editors. Workshops/seminars are either free or affordably priced and are usually limited to 10 participants. They are open to community members regardless of prior experience, and are held online or our studio, located at the Old American Can Factory (232 Third Street #E-303, in Gowanus, Brooklyn).

These workshops are a part of UDP’s broader mission as a literary arts organization to create affordable opportunities for writers, poets, and artists of all levels of experience to expand their skill sets and learn small press practices. By keeping workshops either free or sliding scale, we also aim to help address inequities in arts education in New York City. In the long run, we hope this program expands  the small press tradition and contributes to the sustainability of an alternative ecosystem for artistic production and distribution. You may also be interested in our volunteer Presse Days, an open invitation to community members to visit our studio, assist with the production of chapbooks and books, and learn bookmaking techniques from our staff.
